Personal Financial Management / Banking Guide:

  1. The Chinese Currency
    There a two terms in use to describe the Chinese Currency: Renminbi (RMB) and Yuan.
    RMB is used to describe the official currency, Yuan (CNY) is used to describe the currency unit.
    The currency sign used for the yuan is ¥ or the character 元.
    Also common is the colloquial denomination Kuai (Chinese 快, meaning "fast", "cash").
  2. Currency Conversion
    Several currency converters are easily available. A good example is: Oanda
  3. ATM / Credit Cards
    ATM (Automatic Teller Machine) service is provided all over China. On some of the ATMs, debit cards (such as Cirrus and Plus debit cards) issued by the overseas banks can be used.
  4. Credit Cards
    Large hotels, restaurants and department stores accept major international credit cards, i.e. Mastercard, Visa, Diners Club, American Express, and JCB. But frequently only cash can be used.
  5. Traveler’s Checks
    The Bank of China is the only commercial institute that will accept traveler’s checks. Only checks issued by the major commercial banks and traveler check providers of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, France, Germany, Switzerland and Hong Kong can be changed.
  6. Local Bank Accounts
    International students can open accounts of RMB or some major foreign currencies in Bank of China and other major banks.
  7. Foreign Currency Exchange
    Major banks are proving the exchange of foreign currencies to RMB; most airports and larger hotels are also offering an exchange service.
    According to governmental regulations, if foreign currency is exchanged to RMB, only up to 50% of this amount may be exchanged back to the foreign currency. In this case the original exchange voucher has to be shown.
  8. Banks in the vicinity of China Jiliang University
    Street No. 3 of Xiasha: Construction Bank of China, Agricultural Bank of China, Commercial Bank, Bank of China.
    Street No. 6 of Xiasha: Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), Bank of Communications.
    On the University campus there are ATMs of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), China Merchants Bank, Bank of Communications, and China Industrial Bank.

 

Weather and Climate of Hangzhou:

Situated at 12°16" east longitude and 30°15" north latitude, Hangzhou is about 100 km from the East Sea and belongs to the subtropical monsoon climate area. Hangzhou boasts distinct four seasons and a warm and humid climate with an annual average temperature of 16.2 ℃ and an annual average precipitation of 1500mm.
There are about 150 raining days per year. Generally the lowest temperature can be expected in January, the highest in July.

 

Transportation to/from Downtown Hangzhou:

Hangzhou offers a very extensive public transportation network, which is covered by the following options.
  • Bus

    Several bus categories are available.
    the most important one for faster transport are the
    Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Lines:
    These lines generally start with the letter "B", such as B1, B2, B支1, B支2, etc.
    These articulated and roomier buses stop at dedicated BRT stations, where a transfer to other "B" routes is possible without paying any additional fare.

    The B1 is the BRT line that connects directly with the center of Hanghzou. It has a bus stop conveniently located right next to China Jiliang University.

  • Subway

    The Hangzhou metro system is under development and will have a total of 10 lines by the end of 2020. Currently, subway line 1, 2, 4, and 5 are in (partial) service.
    Line 1
    includes a main line and a branch line that connects Xiacheng, Xiasha and Linping Districts:
    Main Line:
    Xianghu – Binkang Road – Xixing – Binhe Road – Jiangling Road – Jinjiang – Wujiang Road – Chengzhan (Main Railway Station) – Ding'an Road – Longxiangqiao – Fengqi Road – Wulin Square (good for center of Hangzhou) – West Lake Cultural Square – Datieguan – Zhalongkou – East Railway Station (best train station to Shanghai) – Pengbu – Qibao – Jiuhe Road – Jiubao – Coach Center – West Xiasha – Jinshahu – Gaosha Road – Wenze Road (closest station to CJLU campus) - South Wenhai Road – Yunshui – Xiasha Jiangbin
    Going from Wenze Road to the center of Hangzhou at Wulin Square will typically take 45 minutes.
    Linping Branch Line:

  • Taxi

    The taxi system in Hangzhou is considered one of the best in China.
    Most of the recommended city taxis are turquoise-green; they can easily be identified by the word Taxi printed in both English and Chinese. Taxi drivers have to use the meter as required by law and should normally print a receipt. These receipts can later be used to identify the taxi in case of problems, such as loss of properties.

  • How to travel from CJLU to downtown Hangzhou: BRT Line B1 or Subway Line 1

    Best way:
    Take Subway Line 1 from Wenze Road Station. It takes 15 minutes to walk from the CJLU campus to the subway station. Alternatively Bus Line 373 can be taken to reach the station (two stops).

  • Wumart Supermarket

    Many smaller supermarkets are available in the vicinity of CJLU. The biggest one is Wumart which is located near the Wenze Road subway station and can be reached using Bus Line 373 (or walking).
